“Stay woke”. Have you heard this phrase? It’s a slang phrase that’s taken on a focused meaning of being awakened to matters of racial injustice and racism. I’m not sure what kinds of feelings or emotions rise in you when you read that last sentence. It seems today that there’s division everywhere we look.
This is not just a cultural issue. It’s not just an issue “out there”. This is a biblical and spiritual issue, and to overlook it would be to ignore the largest elephant in the cultural room today.
If the church is truly the hope of the world, then we should have something hopeful to say about racism. We are called to become a new community, with Christ at the center. Jesus prayed in John 17 that we would be one, and I think we need to consider that prayer in racial terms.
In a world full of polarizations, we must stop swinging the pendulum to the extremes, and find ground we can all stand on — together as one. [OCTOBER 20TH TO NOV 3RD]
